Seeing Feelingly: A Visual Study in Screenwriting

Seeing Feelingly invites filmmakers, writers, and all kinds of storytellers to deepen their understanding of screenwriting by learning the language of visual storytelling.

As Gloucester says in King Lear, “I see it feelingly.” This idea is the workshop’s central tenet: an invitation to perceive through both sight and feeling.

This workshop introduces The Camera’s Eye™, Emily Robyn Clark’s original method where observation is the foundation for visual writing. Participants will practice seeing as the camera sees, then begin translating observation into scene work. This workshop focuses on the visual language of cinema: how films communicate, and how to translate these transmissions to the page.

Through film clips, screenplay examples, and guided observation exercises, we will study how a scene reveals character, how images carry emotion, how movement creates meaning, and how atmosphere can shape the viewer’s experience before a single line of dialogue is spoken.

After attending this workshop, you will be able to observe image, movement, atmosphere, character in action and subtext and apply those observations to writing strong visual scenes.
