Hey! I attempted to apply, but it says the email domain hodgepodgeproductions could not be found? Is there another way to apply or another email to send through? Thank you!

Seeking Gaffer

Hi all! Seeking a Gaffer to help Monika Gossman (FSU theater professor) wrap up her full feature film. There are 6 days left for principal photography, she would need help Dec 9 - 14, shooting in Tallahassee. This is a low-to-no budget project at this stage, but she is offering a flat rate of $300 for gaffing support. Reach out to me with question or if youโ€™re interested in helping :)

The production already has all the gear, we just need someone with the know-how to operate it.

I was able to talk with her and refer her to some other local crew! I was only available for a couple days.

Lampshade made of skin

Recently I had the honor to create a prop for a local play! Now that it's no longer in production, I can finally share about it!

I was asked to make a lamp shade out of skin that could be manipulated from within.

Originally I was handed an old lampshade and crusty leather seats from an old Toyota for materials. However, I had a different idea in mind!

I decided to make the skin with a product called Dragon Skin. It's a 1:1 liquid formula, that when mixed together, it solidifies into latex! It's one of my favorite techniques for various styles of Special Effects!

Once the skin panels were made, I carefully hand stitched them together, and sealed the stitching with more latex. This allowed the lamp to keep its form without tearing when someone presses their hand against it! Needless to say, this prop was very effective forโ€ฆ

Pretty profound insight into getting to the heart of a character and giving the audience what they're really after.

Production Sound - Pt 2

The break-out-your-wallet option.

Instead of recording the sound directly into the camera (which DOES solve the problem of syncing audio to video), we are going to go to a double-system recording process.

The main component of this is a field recorder. While you might think "I can just use my laptop and my USB audio interface for this and save money", keep in mind that you may be moving around with the recording gear (following the actors), depending upon the scene. It may also be in the woods, with no power sources available.

There are a range of prices for field recorders. Anything from the Zoom H4Essentials ($220) to gear that is thousands of dollars.

Features to consider: Phantom power, powered by batteries, at least 2 Combo input jacks (takes both XLR and quarter inch inputs). The more inputs you have, the more options you have. This covers the recorder.โ€ฆ

Thanks for this info, Brian! Are there any local options for renting equipment that youโ€™re aware of?

Production Sound - Pt 1

We know that sound is important, but how to capture it?

The easiest way is to use the microphone built into the camera (or attach a microphone to the camera).

The issue here is how far away the camera is to the subject. Your audio may not be so great.

The next easiest way is to position your mics closer to the talent.

We have options:

The free option: the cell phone. If it's a part of the scene, this is great! Have the actor record a video, then take that video from them and separate the video from the audio (You won't need the video; the inside of their shirt pocket is not exactly thrilling stuff to watch). You just need the audio track. If it's not a part of the scene, figure out a way to hide it or have it as a set dressing piece.
